Program for September to December 2011
Well, the cool weather has arrived, and I’m sure at least a few of us happy about that; it was just a little too hot. The predictions, if you can believe them, are for a long and beautiful Fall. Let’s hope they’re right for a change.
Our picnic was not as well attended as usual, with many of our members sick or away on holidays, but it was very nice nevertheless. Incredibly, there were no mosquitoes out there either this year! The food was good and so was the company. Thanks to everyone who helped in any way, especially some of the young people - Reiner, Wendy, and Tom. Our new neighbours, Mike and Lucy Giancola, who donated several bottles of their wine, which was delicious and very much appreciated. We were all over Magda and Wolgang’s lawn and used their fridges and freezers. Thanks, to George and Hans, and finally to Bill, for his help and his great and positive attitude, as always.
Tuesday, October 4 - 7:30 PM: Meeting in the Club Rooms. Among other things, we have to discuss the Schlachtfest. Please come out, it will be nice to see each other again, and to catch up on what’s been happening all summer.
Saturday, October 22 - Schlachtfest. We are asking for prizes or cash donations for the Raffle. Like always, please be generous with your help and - also important - stay cheerful! This is our only fundraiser, and the work there is to do is not going to kill any of us, if we share it. You can get your tickets from Kathy at 339-8319. The Bavarian Music Works are playing.
Sunday, November 20 - Communion Breakfast. George and Barbara are in charge. (If they’re actually in town, that is. Between trips to Toronto, Sacramento and now Santa Monica, it’s getting harder and harder to pin them down.) Just kidding …sort of… but not really!
Abendschoen to Gerstner - Baking
Gunkel to Kunce - Cole Slaw or other salad
Kussmann to Zeyen - Potato Salad
Tuesday, December 6 - 7:30 PM Adventsfeier. That gives us all lots of time to find some readings, etc. etc. Some jokes too, please, for later on while we’re having our Gluehwein!
FYI: Some of you may know this already: The Christkindlmarkt, put on each year in Winnipeg by the German Canadian Congress at Fort Garry Place, is to be held in our (St. Joseph’s) hall this year. If you have not been to one of these events, you will be pleasantly surprised at the size and scope of it. There will be entertainment all day long, and booths with baking , Christmas decorations and other things to buy; a coffee shop with German baking, and so much more. The schedule of entertainers will be printed out by the DKK soon, and we will get copies for you. The dates for the Christkindlmarkt are: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November, 25, 26 and 27. Be sure to come, there will be something for everyone.
Sunday, December 18 - 2:30 PM Christmas Party. We need entertainers!!! And please don’t forget some baking. Please don’t rush off but help clean up afterwards: some of the young people have been helping lately, which is just lovely to see. Our phoning committee will call you, etc. etc.
They will also notify you of the date and time of our Annual General Meeting in early January.
Out condolences to Terri Haussler whose brother passed away this summer.
We wish Adolph Kussmann continued good progress with his new knee. Also to Berta Pesun, who, incredibly, was hospitalized in Europe for several weeks, unable to travel home.
There are, of course, many other members with health issues, some of which we probably don’t even know about. Hopefully everyone will feel better soon!
Please call me, Regina, at 339-6895 or 204-378-5551, if you hear anything.
Finally, the Winzerfest is to be held on Saturday, October 1st at the German Hall. Tickets can be bought from Kathy Schoffner at 339-8319 or any German Choir member. It’s a nice evening out with lots of dancing to the BMW and a great Tombola! Hope to see you there!!
